The University of the Philippines Libraries launched on May 24 “Buklod,” the new library services platform (LSP) and the UP Library’s next-generation library management system just in time for its centennial celebration.
According to the University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB) Library, Buklod’s design will serve as a union catalog of all information resources found in the different libraries across the UP System.
It is also meant to support cooperative cataloging and resource sharing among these participating institutions. It can manage print collections, online collections, and other relevant formats.
For students from UP campuses, namely UP Visayas, UPB, UP Manila, UP Diliman (UPD), UPD Extension Programs in Pampanga and Olongapo, and UP Integrated School, Buklod is accessible through its website: buklod.up.edu.ph
The launch was simultaneously held on-site at the UPD Main Library and streamed live on Zoom and the University Library’s Facebook page.
Chito N. Angeles, former university librarian and now head of the Information Technology Division of the UPD Libraries, custom-developed Buklod.
Buklod replaced “Tuklas,” the UP Library Online Public Access Catalog launched in 2020.
While Tuklas did its job, AB De Castro, the program’s emcee from the Information Services and Instruction Services/Filipina Books Section of the UPD Library, said that it was not without its share of issues.
“One constant question people asked was ‘How do I look for my library borrowing history?’” De Castro said, before adding that Buklod was able to address the issue. It was developed to provide better functionality and user-friendliness compared to Tuklas.
Training sessions were also held during the launch of Buklod until May 25, where Angeles led a tutorial where he demonstrated the use of the new platform and explained its features.
“Buklod” derived its name from the Tagalog term which “conveys the union of Library systems,” university librarian Elvira B. Lapuz said.
“It conveys the idea of harmonization or “pagbubuklod” and buklod being the root word,” she added.
