Ateneo Blue Eagles led with a 7-0 slate as the first round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 84 men's basketball event concluded on April 9.
It was a clean sweep for the previous season’s victors as they wrapped up with a 91-80 victory against the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers at the Mall of Asia Arena.
"They got us to a bad set where they're playing better,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga at the postgame press conference.
A 20-point lead in the second quarter was brought down to seven by UST point guard Joshua Fontanilla, which didn’t last long as Ateneo bounces back with a 24-point margin at the end of the third quarter.
Thanks to the efforts of Ateneo’s sharpshooting guard and the game’s biggest Blue Eagle scorer Tyler Tio who fired 20 points — four of which are triples.
“We have a lot of lessons learned in the first round,” said Arespacochaga, “The key is we improve heading into the next round. We’ll watch [the] tape and we’ll prepare for our next opponent.”
True to their word, Ateneo remained undefeated with 13-0 scoring in the second round which began on April 12 and is scheduled to close on May 1.
