Aiming to address learning gaps from two years of remote learning, the Department of Education (DepEd) began developments for a learning recovery program that will serve as the schools’ guide for S.Y. 2022-2023.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones said in the DepEd press release dated March 29 that schools starting to revert back to face-to-face learning after two years of isolation resulted in the creation of the learning recovery program.

“As more schools open their doors for physical learning, the Department is currently crafting a learning recovery program as part of our post-pandemic efforts,” Briones said, adding how with the program, everyone can “catch up” and “accelerate their learning.”

In an EduAksyon press conference on March 11, Assistant Secretary for Curriculum and Instruction Alma Torio said that the program targets “learning remediation and intervention, professional development, health, safety, and wellness.”

“Kasama po d’yan ’yung extending [the] school calendar, expanding learning time, establishing learning support center[s] in schools and community learning spaces,” Torio said.

Also included in the program’s framework is the "socio-emotional and behavioral recovery of learners" through developing DepEd's "Oplan Kalusugan” according to Torio.

"The Oplan Kalusugan [focuses] on child protection/child online protection, and establishment of helplines/ health lines,” she said.

Apart from this, DepEd also offers reading interventions, regular home visits and follow-ups, and physical and virtual study groups/buddy systems.

They also plan to establish literacy at home and in the community, tap the services of parent or guardian teacher-volunteers, and develop appropriate assessment tasks and resources.

The Department will divide the program into three phases, with the first phase expected to take place in Summer 2022, the second in S.Y. 2022-2023, and the third in S.Y. 2023-2024.
